SECOND JHANIC SAMADI.

SECOND JHANIC SAMADI.

When one comes to the First Jhanic Samadi, in order to get rid of the last few of the thinking, the practitioner applies his own thinking in relation to the Bhavana object, i.e. In and out breathing. For instance, when he cognizes by his attention, the in breathing he would apply a thinking as 'in breathing' and when he cognizes by his attention, the out breathing he would apply a thinking as 'out breathing' or something similar, such as counting the breathing as the applied thinking, which would be continually sustained to get rid of all the other thinking. When this applied thinking is sustained, it is known as Fixation (Fixation of Attention is Sati), or concentration. Here one 'cognizes' the breathing.

Now in his mind there is Fixation (Ekagratha) leading to cognization of the breathing, Applied thought, Sustained thought, Happiness and Joy.

Then is the Attention (Manasikaraya), which was used to come to this stage have become absent?

No, Fixation (Ekagratha), means the one-pointedness of the Attention, without wavering, which is Sati. Hence, Manasikaraya (Attention) becomes Sati (continuous Attention) with a fixation on the object here.

Then one would feel that he cannot take way the attention away from the breathing and also would find that he cannot stop the Applied and Sustained thinking on the breathing.

Since, the resting of the body is related to the resting of the mind, when the body falls to a more restful state, and then that state is not compatible with any thinking, this applied and sustained thinking can no longer function and the Attention would remain Fixed with the breathing, without thinking about breathing or anything else, Thoughtless, having only the Fixation (Ekagratha) of Attention (Sati) , Happiness and Joy.

This is Second Jhanic Samadi.

Is there any other way to drop the Applied and Sustained thinking, to come to the Second Jhanic Samadi?
