THINKING STIMULATES WHILE AWARENESS RETAINS AND PERPETUATES.
When one 'thinks' it would stimulate the 'root' defilements to manifest. One cannot detect the roots, unless one is established in 'Sati' on the Body, Sensations, Mind and Mental States.
The manifest defilements, which are Anger, Desire, Lust, Ego and Ignorance (ideas and opinions), which one can detect, if he pays Attention to oneself and his Mind.
Thinking not only stimulate the defilements, but the thinking always makes one be Aware of the object, what one thinks of.
Awareness perpetuates by grasping at the Perception (i.e. Thinking) as a retained memory item including all the related images. This perpetuation of the Awareness continually help to maintain and sustain the manifest Anger, Desire, Lust, Ego and Ignorance (ideas and opinions).
Hence, Buddhist practice of Bhavana begins with Attention and detection, to put away Awareness first and Thinking second, etc.
